Professor Rachel Anderson Named a Leader in Diversity

Rachel J. Anderson is a professor of law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

The National Jurist magazine named Professor Anderson to its list of 20 law professors recognized for making a significant contribution to diversity in legal education. The results were presented in the article, “Why Diversity Matters,” and appear in the magazine’s Fall 2015, Back to School issue.

Nearly 100 nominations for outstanding minority law professors were received by the magazine, of which 20 were selected for going beyond the norm of furthering diversity efforts.

The article read: “Rachel Anderson has had her hand in a number of programs that offer an opportunity for law students to put critical perspectives on race and law into practice at the law school and in the community. One, the Youth & Justice Workshop, is an annual community event in which youth engage in conversation about their rights and responsibilities. …In the Youth Voting Rights Project, which Anderson co-created, high school teachers and law students engage in education on advanced citizenship.”

Professor Rachel Anderson Presents at We the People Training

Rachel J. Anderson is a professor of law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

On June 19, she was featured in an article titled "CCSD teachers take part in We the People training," which was posted on the Clark County School District website.

The article reads, "Nearly three dozen CCSD educators took part in three days of We the People Summer Training through June 10 at the State Bar of Nevada. On June 9, UNLV Professor Rachel Anderson, Esq. led discussions on the 14th amendment."

Professor Anderson's research and teaching interests focus on business law, civil and human rights, empirical legal studies, and international law. 

April 16 Boyd Briefs Now Available

The April 16 issue of Boyd Briefs is now available.

This week's edition features Professor Rachel Anderson, student Andrew Dunning, and alumna Jenny Routheaux '08.

At the law school, Professor Anderson is a dedicated supporter of student events and the faculty advisor to student organizations. At the university level, she is a frequent target for steering committees and strategic initiatives. Across the state of Nevada, she is appreciated as the vice president of the American Civil Liberties Union. And throughout the country (and even the world), she is well known for her work with the National Bar Association.

Dunning serves as a student attorney in Boyd's Juvenile Justice Clinic, providing accused children advocacy and a voice. Through the clinic, he is involved with legislative efforts to protect the rights of minors in court and assists in preventing juvenile offenders from being charged and tried as adults. Dunning has served as an articles editor for the UNLV Gaming Law Journal, legacy historian for Phi Alpha Delta, research assistant to Professor Jean Sternlight, student associate for LexisNexis, Steiger Fellow for the Nevada Attorney General's Office, and judicial extern for the Honorable Philip Pro in United States District Court.

Routheaux is an associate in the Minneapolis office of the international law firm of Dorsey & Whitney LLP. She is a member of Dorsey's Finance and Restructuring Group, where she focuses on borrower and lender representation in commercial lending transactions, including construction, real estate, commercial gaming and leveraged financing. She also assists clients with real estate transactional matters, including leasing and acquisition and sales of real property.

Professor Rachel Anderson, Alumna Sandra Douglass Morgan Honored at Urban Chamber of Commerce Luncheon

On March 27, Professor Rachel Anderson and alumna Sandra Douglass Morgan '03 were honored at the Urban Chamber of Commerce Annual Women in Business & Politics Awards Luncheon (click for photos) held at the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino.

Professor Anderson was honored with a Women in Business award. She also received a Certificate of Commendation from U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), a Senatorial Recognition from U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nev.), a Certificate of Special Congressional Commendation from U.S. Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-Nev.), a Certificate of Special Recognition from U.S. Representative Joe Heck (R-Nev), a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from U.S. Congressman Crescent Hardy (R-Nev), and a certificate of recognition from Lieutenant Governor Mark A. Hutchinson (R-Nev.). Professor Anderson's research and teaching interests focus on business law, civil and human rights, empirical legal studies, and international law. At UNLV, she serves as faculty advisor for the Black Law Students Association, the Gaming Law Journal, and the NAACP's student chapter. She is the President of the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association, a Director of the American Society of Comparative Law, a Vice President of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, a Vice Chair of the Law Professors Division of the National Bar Association, a member of the National Bar Association's Judicial Selection Committee, and a Director of the U.C. Berkeley Alumni Chapter in Las Vegas.

At the luncheon, Douglass Morgan was recognized with a Women in Politics award. Douglass Morgan was named City Attorney for the City of North Las Vegas in December 2013. She has practiced law since 2003. Prior to joining North Las Vegas, Douglass Morgan worked as in-house counsel for a gaming corporation and in private practice in Southern Nevada. She was honored as one of the National Bar Association’s Nation’s Best Advocates under 40 in July 2012 and Attorney of the Year by the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association in October 2012. She was voted among the state's top 10 government attorneys by Nevada Business Magazine in its Legal Elite 2014 issue.

Black Law Students Association at Boyd Honored at Organization’s National, Regional Conventions

It may only be three months into the year, but it has already been an incredible one for the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at the William S. Boyd School of Law. It has been win, win, and then win some more for the organization.

Members of Boyd’s BLSA recently returned from the National Black Law Students Association 47th Annual National Convention held March 11-15 in Portland, Ore., having experienced a night to remember. The chapter earned one of the evening’s most prestigious honors – 2014-2015 Chapter of the Year.

Chapter of the Year Awards are given to chapters that have demonstrated a high standard of excellence in their work to improve their law school and local community, as well as to help eliminate national problems, such as educational inequity in low-income communities. Boyd was recognized for its accomplishments throughout the year, including: community service events, such as packaging hygiene kits for disaster relief and packaging and delivering food to the elderly and indigent in the Las Vegas community; mentoring elementary, middle, and high school students and 1Ls; hosting pre-law events for undergraduate students; hosting “Know Your Rights” panel discussions on campus and in the community; and organizing leadership empowerment and social events for the Boyd community.

“This is the first time in the history of our law school that an award of this magnitude has been achieved by the Boyd BLSA,” said Professor Rachel Anderson, BLSA advisor. “This award recognizes not only BLSA's successes but also many other qualities demonstrated by the members of our local chapter: ability, dedication, and, above all, excellence. This national recognition increases the visibility of the William S. Boyd School of Law among law students around the country and will surely open more pathways to opportunity and success.”

The recognition follows on the achievements of BLSA at the organization’s 47th Annual Western Regional Convention held earlier this year in Long Beach, Calif.

At the regional level, the chapter walked away with several awards, including: Western Region Chapter of the Year for its outstanding contributions to the law school and the Las Vegas valley; President of the Year to Scott Morris, chapter president and newly elected sub-regional director; Sister in Service Award (for service to Boyd and the community) to Crislove Igeleke, chapter vice president of operations and philanthropy; Brother in Service Award to Steven “JT” Washington; and Best Respondent Brief of the Year in the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition to the team of Loline-Marie Djidade, chapter secretary, and Mahogany Turfley.

The evening was, however, more than just about winning. It was about peer recognition and validation that hard work pays off.

“Being recognized and honored at the convention felt good,” said Morris. “They handed the awards out at the dinner and it got to the point where they were repeatedly calling the Boyd School of Law up for awards. And this was in front of people we’ve known for a long time … law students from Whittier Law School, UCLA, USC, and we were number one … it felt good to just be in front of your peers and recognized on that level because we put in a lot of hard work, strategy, time, and planning making things happen so I think it was a big boost of confidence for our chapter and affirmed we were on the right track.”

The chapter returned triumphant with more than half of the evening’s awards, a regional convention success, said Igeleke.

“​We were all very thrilled with the success of the team and our BLSA chapter, but even more grateful to be part of a law school that has prepared us academically and greatly supports leadership and service in the community,” she said. “Our success is a reflection of this great law school community we have here at Boyd.”

Morris echoed Igeleke’s sentiments, adding it even “engaged membership because they could see how planning evolved into a successful showing at the convention.”

More importantly, the organization’s success was a way to represent Boyd, Morris said.

“I think it was a good way to represent the Boyd School of Law because we have so many good things here: so many great programs, so many great students, so many great people, and professors. I think it was time for us to be recognized on a regional scale – not just here in Las Vegas, because we have a very good reputation here – but I think it was time to highlight the good things that we’re doing on a broader level … We’re known for our legal writing, and for Loline-Marie and Mahogany to receive the Best Respondent Brief of the Year just highlights and gives more credibility to the fact that we have a fantastic writing program here.”

The Western Region of the BLSA includes law schools in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. The National Black Law Students Association is the largest student-run organization in the nation, with six regions representing more than 6,000 members.

Professor Anderson recently traveled to San Jose Feb. 6-7 to participate on a corporate responsibility panel at the Santa Clara Law School Journal of International Law’s 2015 Symposium. The symposium was co-sponsored by the Center for Global Law and Policy.

Professor Rachel Anderson Named Chair of Vice President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

Professor Anderson was recently named Chair of the Vice President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion (VPCDI). Established in 2011, the VPCDI is an autonomous body made up of faculty and staff volunteers working together to support the development and enhancement of programs, services and opportunities for underrepresented groups at UNLV, including faculty, staff and students.

As part of her new role, Professor Anderson will also sit on the President’s Advisory Council and the Committee on Full Participation, Engagement, and Diversity.

Professors Rachel Anderson, Stacey Tovino to Attend Southeastern Association of Law Schools Conference

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

Stacey Tovino is the Lincy Professor of Law at the Boyd School of Law.

Professors Anderson and Tovino will attend the Southeastern Association of Law Schools 2014 Conference from July 29 to Aug. 6 in Amelia Island, Fla.

Professor Anderson will moderate a panel on “The Future of Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.”

On Aug. 1, Professor Tovino will give a talk on the law and ethics of grateful patient fundraising as part of a "Hot Issues in Law and Bioethics" panel during a Health Law Workshop. Additionally, on Aug. 5, Professor Tovino will serve as Boyd's representative at the SEALS Steering Committee meeting.

The annual meeting offers legal educators the opportunity to engage with panels and discussion groups on a variety of cutting-edge topics and legal issues, which will prove important for both scholarly work and classroom teaching.

Professor Tovino is a leading expert in health law, bioethics, and the medical humanities. 

Provost John Valery White, Professor Rachel Anderson to Present at NAACP Convention

John Valery White is the Executive Vice President and Provost for UNLV and a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law. Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the Boyd School of Law.

Provost White and Professor Anderson will attend the 105th Annual NAACP Convention in Las Vegas from July 19 to 23. Provost White will present on the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) panel titled "School Desegregation - 60 years after Brown v. Board of Education." Professor Anderson will present on the Continuing Legal Education panel titled “Supreme Court Review and Preview.”

The two-day CLE seminar is hosted by the NAACP in conjunction with the National Bar Association.

Provost White was the second dean of the Boyd School of Law and guided the law school through the recession years while continuing its growth and development into a great law school. He became the Executive Vice President and Provost of UNLV in July 2012. He retains his tenure in the law school.

Professor Anderson is the Faculty Adviser for the UNLV NAACP Student Chapter, which has more than 50 graduate and undergraduate student members. Her research and teaching interests focus on business law, civil and human rights, empirical legal studies, and international law.

Professor Rachel Anderson Speaks on Topic of Voter Registration in Nevada

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

Professor Anderson gave a presentation in Las Vegas on June 30 for individuals who are registering voters for the 2014 election in Clark County. In particular, she spoke on the topic of voter registration of Nevadans who have been disenfranchised.

Professor Rachel Anderson to Present at National Bar Association's 89th Annual Conference

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

Professor Anderson will attend the National Bar Association’s 89th Annual Convention in Atlanta from July 25 to July 31 in her capacity as President of the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association, a Vice President of the Law Professor’s Division, and a presenter on a Continuing Legal Education panel.

During the annual conference, she will be presenting two talks, titled “Re-enfranchisement: Race, Criminal ‘Justice,' and Fulfilling the Promise of One Person, One Vote” and “Pushing Back on the Prison to Voteless Pipeline: An Action Plan for Individuals and Groups.”

Professor Rachel Anderson to Attend Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

On June 24, Professor Anderson will attend the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. The invitation-only event will take place at the Rotunda of the United States Capitol. 

At the ceremony, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Representative Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH) and Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) will join Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). During the ceremony, the leaders will present a Congressional Gold Medal in honor of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King, whose leadership within the Civil Rights Movement greatly contributed to the law’s passage. The Congressional Gold Medal represents Congress’ highest expression of appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions to the nation.

Professor Rachel Anderson to Present at Lutie A. Lytle Black Women Law Faculty Writing Workshop

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

On June 26, Professor Anderson will present a paper on the use of empirical data in legal scholarship at the 2014 Lutie A. Lytle Black Women Law Faculty Writing Workshop at the University of Wisconsin Law School.

She also serves as a planning committee member for the annual workshop.

On Thursday, April 17, UNLV hosted the first Academic Achievement Gala, which highlighted significant student and faculty achievements of the 2013-2014 academic year.

Professor Rachel Anderson Featured in Lawyers of Color Magazine's 50 Under 50 List

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

She was recently featured in Lawyers of Color magazine's 2014 50 Under 50 list, which recognizes the nation’s most influential minority law professors who are 50 years old or younger. 

"Professor Anderson is actively engaged in legal academia and organizations at the local, state, and national levels.She is often invited as a speaker and has given over forty presentations, including at academic conferences, Continuing Legal Education seminars, and community events, and has served as an expert witness on corporate governance in litigation," her profile in the magazine reads.

Boyd Faculty to Present at World Affairs Council Event

On Monday, April 28, Boyd School of Law’s Professor Rachel Anderson and Associate Professor Marketa Trimble will join UNLV Political Science professor Christian Jensen on a panel for a World Affairs Council event. The panel will be moderated by Daniel Hamilton, Dean of the Boyd School of Law.

UNLV will open the event’s presentations with a discussion on "Transnational and National Law in the European Union: Is Harmonization Possible?"

The program will be hosted by the World Affairs Councils of America in partnership with the Delegation of the European Union in the United States.

The full-day event will feature a series of discussions on trade and investment between the United States and the EU. Attendees include diplomats from EU Member States,  the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and representatives from legal, education and banking sectors.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Mr. Linas Linkevicius, will serve as the event’s keynote speaker.

Professor Rachel Anderson Presents at American Bar Association Spring Meeting

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

Professor Anderson, the Nevada State Liaison to the American Bar Association's Corporate Law Committee, presented an update on Nevada business legislation to the Committee on April 10. The update was part of the ABA Business Law Section's Spring 2014 meeting.

Professor Rachel Anderson Moderates Black History Month Panel

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

On Feb. 17, Professor Anderson moderated a Black History Month panel on Judicial and Black Legal History in Nevada. The event was sponsored by the Clark County Black Caucus.

Professor Rachel Anderson Receives Certificate of Appreciation from PLAN

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

On March 2, she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada for "Elevating the Conversation on Issues of Racial Equity and Social Justice."

"It was such a nice surprise, and I knew nothing about it until they announced it," Professor Anderson said.

Professor Rachel Anderson Featured in Bloomberg

Rachel Anderson is a Professor of Law at the William S. Boyd School of Law.

On Sept. 13, she was featured in the Bloomberg article Wynn Resorts Tightens Rules for Board Service, Meetings.

The article reads, "Companies may choose to designate specific courts where claims can be made, just as they sometimes require arbitration to settle disputes, Rachel J. Anderson, a law professor at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, said today in an interview."

Wynn Resorts designated a Clark County court as its main legal forum for disputes.
